Just want to point out that Norval Morisseau does not equate Native Woodland Art. A LOT of people copy his work and it's so disappointing since this style was so intrinsic to his spirituality and life experiences.

I'm Ojibwe (same tribal group as Norval) and frequently have the discussion of what is appropriation if you have the same heritage. It's not a white guy copying Basquiat kind of situation, since many of the copycats are Ojibwe. However, it is unsettling to see the removal of his name and legacy and have it replaced with Woodland Native Art.

Thank you for taking the time to comment and share your thoughts on Norval Morrisseau’s work. Your perspective is truly thought-provoking. Wikipedia does mention that Morrisseau founded this so-called "genre," but I’m not sure if that claim has been verified by his foundation. It’s possible that this theory isn’t entirely grounded in fact.

It’s surprisingly effective for keeping loose tabs on things, like a rock in the shoe focuses everything else ⭐️

Thanks for sharing Shagun. It resonates with what I am trying to write about. Did you find that if artists focused on the money, it detracted from their motivation to create. And were there more than visual artists that participated in the thread?

Apologies for not responding to this earlier. I felt that the primary motivation for artists was money. This group was very entrepreneurial. From what I could gather, most were visual artists, but the group also included sculptors, performing artists, muralists, and illustrators. Hope this helps
